Oscillating syngas production on NiO/YSZ catalyst
from methane oxidation

RSC Adv., 2020, 10, 26693–26698; doi:10.1039/d0ra02051f

Syngas is a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen and is used to produce a wide range of products such as fertilizers, fuels, solvents and synthetic materials. It is typically produced either by oxidising coal with steam or by the partial oxidation of methane. A large amount of research is being performed to optimise catalysts for the production of syngas from methane oxidation. The Hiden CATLAB reactor system with an integrated mass spectrometer has been used to investigate syngas production using a Nickel oxide/yttrium-stabilized zirconia (NiO/YSZ) catalyst and by disturbing the oxygen flow during the reaction. Results from mass spectroscopy (together with infrared measurements) has provided the reaction mechanism that governs the oxidation of methane on the NiO/YSZ cermet and presents a technique that can be applied to the catalysis of other metal/anion or cation conductor systems
