Medical technology companies are a key driver of medical progress with intensive commitment to research and development. Rapid developments are taking place to influence the biocompatibility of materials. New manufacturing processes and modern composite materials in connection with coating technologies as well as the functionalization of surfaces have continued to fuel the area in recent years. In addition to the modification of metallic and ceramic surfaces, organic materials, in particular polymers, can also be specifically adapted in terms of their degradation and crosslinking through hydrophilization or hydrophobization. Antimicrobial properties are also sought, as is a coating with biogenic, organic components to increase biocompatibility.
