Correlated SIMS and secondary electron image of Li-ion battery separator

Lithium is a vital component in the chemistry of many modern batteries, however, it is not possible to detect it with traditional x-ray microscopy analysis tools. However, lithium presents an exceptionally strong signal in secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) enabling it to be clearly ovserved in SIMS images.  In addition to imaging, analysis of the concentration variation with depth is also possible as the FIB exposes buried material.
